The shocking images of the May floods in Emilia Romagna are still in the memory of many Italians. Chaos and floods have dominated TV news programs in recent weeks. Now the summer holidays are canceled in the holiday destination popular with the Swiss. Meteorologists warn of severe thunderstorms.

Roger Perret of Meteo News reveals the reason for the uncomfortable weather in June. A Mediterranean low in the west of the country will cause bad weather in many regions of Italy on Wednesday and Thursday.

flood possible

The Italian weather portal ilmeteo.it already reported on Wednesday about severe thunderstorms moving through northern Italy. Particularly affected: Lake Como, Lake Garda and the province of Udine. “The regions that suffered from flooding in recent weeks are now receiving a lot of precipitation again,” Swiss meteorologist Perret explains to Blick. “That can cause new problems, it doesn’t take much.” There is a risk of flash floods, landslides and other flooding.

But that’s not all: “These thunderstorms will also reach central and southern Italy,” the weather expert predicts. Sardinia also has to be prepared for something. It is already starting to blow quite a bit in Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Umbria and Marche.

Everything is fine again on the weekend

Civil protection responds to the weather situation and has issued the yellow alert for parts of Piedmont, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria, Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, Marche and parts of Lombardy.

Some Italian media even warned of an approaching hurricane. Perret thinks that’s exaggerated. “There are no gusts of wind,” he says.

According to Perret, the weather will not calm down until Friday. “Then the low-pressure area will move further towards the Balkans,” says the weatherman. The low has no influence on the weather in Switzerland.
