The speech to the United Federal Assembly is based on a decision by the council offices of the two chambers on May 5. The offices noted at the time that the speech would take place during the current summer session. Modalities and time were initially open.
The idea came from the Ukrainian government itself, the Ukrainian embassy submitted the corresponding request. Selenski’s speech to the Federal Assembly, scheduled for June 15, was criticized by the SVP after it became known.
Their party chairman and national councilor Thomas Aeschi (ZG) submitted a request to the municipal council to reject the request. Ukraine is trying to influence parliamentary decisions.
Zelensky’s speech, which was broadcast in the National Council hall, is not the first speech by the Ukrainian president in Switzerland since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against his country.
As early as March 2022 – shortly after the start of the attack in violation of international law – Selenski addressed the participants of a peace demonstration on the Bundesplatz in Bern via video. He was welcomed as a “friend” by Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.
The National Council and the Council of States had clearly condemned the Russian offensive war. With this explanation, the Council services justified their green light. Video speeches are part of Kyiv’s foreign policy repertoire. Selenski has already made relevant speeches to the US Congress, the UK House of Lords and Lower House and various parliaments of EU countries. (SDA)
