After rather sobering sales figures in Europe in recent years, Toyota’s flamboyant subsidiary Lexus is now on the rise again. Sales in Switzerland increased by 22.2 percent last year and are expected to continue to rise. Thanks to new models like the all-electric RZ 450e or the brand new luxury van hybrid LM 350h.
And the new small SUV LBX, now presented, is meant to truly break the ground: the “Lexus Breakthrough Crossover” (LBX) is the first Lexus model developed by and for Europe, seeking to appeal primarily to young people.

Depending on the age of the target group, the choice of equipment is also kept purely in social media style: the LBX is presented in four so-called atmospheres that differ in style and color, thus embracing the popular sneaker trend. customization of products.
All kinds of bright colors, from two-tone bodies available in “Emotion” and “Cool” atmospheres with 18-inch wheels. “Elegant” and “Relax” represent classic luxury with a more elegant interior, monochrome finish and glossy 18-inch aluminum. “The LBX should make customers smile and appeal to people who have never been interested in Lexus,” designer Simon Humphries (56) explains.
Technology from brother Toyota
At 4.19 meters, the LBX shares technology and platform with the slightly shorter Toyota Yaris Cross. To keep the weight of the SUV as low as possible and therefore sporty, the hood is made of aluminum and the sills, wheel arches and lower half of the door are made of cast resin. Unfortunately, the luggage volume in the all-wheel drive vehicle has been reduced from 332 liters in the front-wheel drive vehicle to 240 liters.
The full hybrid drivetrain corresponds to that of its Toyota sibling. But with a system output of 136 hp/100 kW and 185 Nm. For comparison: the Yaris Cross 4WD has 116 hp/85 kW and 141 Nm. Lexus LBX also uses a 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine coupled with two electric motors. The 4×4 operates without a mechanical propeller shaft – when traction or driving situation requires it, the rear axle intervenes at lightning speed thanks to the electric motor. The automatic distribution of braking force to all four wheels prevents swaying and reduces the tendency to roll when cornering.
Lexus luxury
Of course, the Lexus LBX offers plenty of comfort as well as sportiness. It starts with the noise level indoors. Japanese technicians have worked hard to reduce noise in the car: special sheet metal suppresses high frequencies, insulation and gaskets on the roof and hood, and foam at sensitive noise points provide the desired silence inside.
The interior’s appearance is similar to that of the mid-size SUV Lexus NX, with a digital instrument cluster used for the first time in a Lexus model. The 9.8-inch touchscreen is the heart of the infotainment system, and the Yaris Cross is more modern than its sibling, but can’t quite keep up with premium German rivals like Audi or BMW. It is good that the software can always be kept up to date with over-the-air updates.
In terms of electronic aids, the small SUV has a blind spot assist, adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera, among other features. Parking assistant takes care of maneuvering in tight parking spaces and can even be controlled via a smartphone. The wet wipe assistant comes from Lexus’ flagships LC and LS and creates a better perspective.
It is not yet known how much the SUV of the social media generation will cost. By a cautious estimate, the entry-level version should start at just under 40,000 francs. The LBX is expected to hit our streets in early 2024.
