“Try explaining that to an American” – the first ESC semi-final was so funny

There was a dancing Human Centipede, 60-year-old men singing about tractors and a Swiss entry that made it to the final. And so the web responds.

The first semifinal of Eurovision 2023 is over! And it was… hey, it was great!

Great entertaining.

Albeit not in the conventional sense.

Sure, for example, Switzerland succeeded with their Sad Boi ballad and Sweden came along as expected the B-side of «Euphoria» a classic Eurovision hit, but there were also acts that… well, those different goods. The kind of acts for which the Eurovision Song Contest is viewed with confusion, especially outside Europe:

Yes, the reactions from the Twittersphere to the first semi-final were as fierce as they were numerous. But let’s start with the team of moderators: Alesha Dixon, for example, who can easily pull a rap up her sleeve:

Got to respect that.

And – oh yes! – this moment when Julia Sanina tried to explain to her co-presenter Hannah Waddingham how to *rock* and was promptly given the receipt:

In any case, Hannah (you know her as an actress in “Ted Lasso” and “Sex Education”) seems to be the secret star of this year’s song contest. Moderation of perfect French? Fine!

Now to the performances. Actually If Loreen was the favorite,…

… but since yesterday it is clear who the audience favorite is:

#SoMuchLove for Finland right now.

Meanwhile in Finland itself:

Now to Switzerland! Remo Forrer made it to the final. The staging in particular seemed to be well received:

What stood out: Switzerland sticks to its success formula.

But ballads in general are controversial…

Good point: at some point you have to go to the toilet. Well, there is one or the other ballad.

Also stood out: Croatia.

Or this: hair choreo. It’s one thing.

No one liked to remember Ireland’s song. Because:

Now a kind of Eurovision standard: the obligatory pagan folklore stew, served by Moldova this year.

And this, dear children, is how a *real diva* ends a song:

Well, we’re all looking forward to the final. The “Big Five” (the largest beneficiary countries of the European Broadcasting Union) Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany and France will also be present. We can especially look forward to the latter:

But Germany also promises to be great:

But in the end, this prediction should come true:
