In principle, the batteries on the e-bike are suitable for use in winter. However, if the e-bike is left outside for a night, for example, it is better to store the battery in a warm house, this can extend the lifespan. Experts recommend a room temperature between 10 and 20 degrees.
A thermal protective cover can also protect the battery against the cold headwind on the road. Specialty stores offer special neoprene covers for this.
Before charging, the battery must be warmed to room temperature. Once charged, the battery will be disconnected from the charger – as a permanent connection will damage it.
If you do not use the e-bike in the winter, do not store the battery too cold. Temperatures between five and twenty degrees are ideal. The battery is best charged for 50 to 80 percent. Correct the state of charge after three months by charging the battery a little. This prevents a possible deep discharge. It can damage the battery, but it is rare. With the start of the new season in the spring you can fully recharge the battery.
Even in winter, detachable devices such as GPS or bike computers should not be missing. They are also sensitive to cold and are better protected against theft within their own four walls.
