This cough usually disappears after eight weeks without medication, researchers led by Samantha Green from the University of Toronto summarized the study situation in the “Canadian Medical Association Journal”.
During and shortly after an infection, the cough stimulus fulfills several important functions for the healing process by transporting bronchial mucus from the lungs. If the cough lasts for several weeks after the infection has cleared, usually between three and eight, it is called post-infectious.
Studies show that in patients without previous illnesses, symptoms usually disappear on their own after a while – so medication is not necessary. If the urge to cough occurs, experts recommend using simple, well-known home remedies instead. A sip of water or tea can soothe an annoying cough. Inhaling moistens the airways and several herbal remedies, such as sage and ivy, can also speed healing
However, for proper treatment it is important to know whether the cough is a harmless consequence of the infection – or a form of asthma, COPD or a symptom of another disease. Smokers and people with weakened immune systems should also be closely monitored, as they are often affected more seriously and for a longer period of time.
The Canadian research group concludes that good information work by treating physicians is especially important when it comes to cough: “It is important to reassure those affected that post-infectious cough is temporary and usually goes away on its own. This can help prevent unnecessary prescriptions, including antibiotics.” If the cough does not disappear after eight weeks, it should be investigated further. (sda/dpa)
