The question concerns not only the automotive industry, but also Ms. and Mr. Schweizer. What is the best-selling new car in Switzerland at the end of the year? From 1975 to 2016 this was the VW Golf 41 times in a row (!). Then he was deposed by the “eternal bestseller” Skoda Octavia. And last year, the Tesla Model 3 topped the Swiss sales charts for the first time, replacing the Octavia.
At the end of 2022, another Tesla model will be at the top of Swiss new car sales statistics. Not the Model 3, of course, but the technically relevant crossover Model Y. With a total of 4928 registrations at the end of 2022, it’s almost close to the Model 3’s 5074 amortization from 2021. However, Tesla Model 3 continued to sell very well in our country last year. With 3,525 records, it managed another respectable fifth place.
The return of the VW Golf
A closer look at the annual sales figures reveals the return of the all-time bestseller, the VW Golf. Declining to 14th place in 2020, Dacia Sandero managed to enter the top 10 in 8th place with 3210 registrations last year. The extremely inexpensive compact car from the Renault subsidiary in Romania rose from 14th to 10th with 3,117 registrations.
In response, the Fiat 500 slipped down the Swiss popularity list. While the little Italian was still in 5th place in 2021, he was “only” enough for 12th place in 2022.
Surprising, by the way: Although there are currently only two different models (but the new Model S and X will be released this year), Tesla is now also in the top ten in Swiss brand statistics for 2022. A total of 8725 Model Y and Model 3 sold last year were good for the 9th row. This puts Tesla ahead of popular bulky brands like Hyundai, Renault and Peugeot.
