“The Big Bang Theory” actually ended in 2019 after twelve seasons. But even three years later, ProSieben never tires of regularly filling mornings, afternoons and evenings with broadcasts of the sitcom about the popular nerds around Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons). Like the media magazine counted for its annual TV review, “The Big Bang Theory” was shown no less than 1,714 times on German television in 2022.
That’s 217 times less than last year considering that no new episodes are being added and there are “only” 279 episodes in total, but it’s still absolutely remarkable. With the continued fire of the “Big Bang Theory” many television viewers will probably still feel that there is probably no other series that has been shown more often on TV, which is also due to its placement at different times throughout the day, the 82nd – fold programming during prime time with a large audience and the prominent station building of ProSieben.
In reality, however, there was, as in previous years several other series that were shown (considerably) more often than “The Big Bang Theory”…
“South Park” back on top
When it comes to the number of series episodes broadcast, Comedy Central was again the absolute leader in 2022. With the animated cult sitcoms “South Park” (3,129 airings), “American Dad!” (2,878 broadcasts) and “Bob’s Burgers” (2,694 broadcasts) the station only occupies the top three spots and has comedic hits “Modern Family” (2,015 broadcasts) and “Malcolm in the middle” (1,997 broadcasts) are two other representatives of the ten most watched series.
“The Big Bang Theory” ranks “only” 12th in the overall broadcast statistics of all German free-to-air TV channels reporting their ratings. Below you will find the top 10, sorted by number of broadcasts:
- 1. “South Park” (3,129 broadcasts)
- 2. “American Dad!” (2878 broadcasts)
- 3. “Bob’s Burgers” (2,694 broadcasts)
- 4. “Medical Detectives” (2,376 broadcasts)
- 5. “Storm of Love” (2,327 broadcasts)
- 6. “The Criminal Court” (2,048 broadcasts)
- 7. “Modern Family” (2,015 broadcasts)
- 8. “Malcolm In The Middle” (1997 broadcasts)
- 9. “Storage Wars” (1,918 broadcasts)
- 10. “In All Friendship” (1,856 broadcasts)
Even at the major stations only place 2 for “TBBT”
Of course the above comparison falls a bit short. Despite all the reruns of long-running series, with much longer formats, shows and all kinds of films, ProSieben’s schedule is much broader than that of Comedy Central, which specializes in comedy series with often shorter episodes.
because of this A separate ranking has also been made this time, in which only the series broadcasts on the eight large full channels ProSieben, RTL, Sat.1, Das Erste, ZDF, Vox, RTL Zwei and Kabel Eins have been taken into account. But here again “The Big Bang Theory” does not come first, with which the series from 2017 to 2019 was still with constant reliability.
Instead, “Medical Detectives” once again outperformed ProSieben’s sitcom. Vox screened the long-lived true-crime docuseries a whopping 2,075 times in 2022 — albeit almost always on the nighttime schedule, so “The Big Bang Theory” was likely much more present in the public eye TV show. If you count the programming on other channels of the RTL broadcasting group, ‘Medical Detectives’ even (as indicated in the list above) ran a total of 2,376 times.
