No, we do not recommend disrespectfully to follow the speed limit to avoid buses – this makes sense. But it often flashes without deliberately driving too fast – and on the other hand, there are five tricks by which you can avoid expensive mistakes, especially in modern cars:
1. Order a head-up display
In times of strict speed monitoring, the mostly optional (price example Skoda Octavia: 750 francs) head-up display is one of the most useful extras: it displays km/h on the windscreen. This way you can follow the speed on the road and not drive too fast as you are looking at the traffic instead of the speedometer. There are optimization solutions in the Accessories section and some apps can do this too (see 5.)
2. Use the limiters and cruise control
Today, even small cars are often equipped with cruise control. You can’t just use this to keep your speed steady while avoiding buses. Cruise control often also has a limiting function: it limits speed if you give it too much throttle. Only full throttle above the pressure point always closes the limiter.
3. Watch out for new car speedometers
Anyone who assumes that the speedometer in new cars is strong in any case may be in for a nasty surprise. Speedometers should never lag behind, but should advance ten percent plus up to 4 km/h (i.e. 16 km/h at 120 speed theoretically). But you don’t have to! Today’s speedometers usually only deviate from 2 to 4 km/h instead of 4 to 7 km/h as in the past. Most of the time anyway: Sometimes it can be just right, depending on the tire profile.
4. Use sign recognition
Cars with traffic sign displays often have a speed limit warning system: the speed limit shown on the display will flash or glow, and even a warning signal will sound. Advantage: Sometimes you can set it when a warning is given. For example, if the speedometer in the car is 5 km/h ahead, you would set “Warning from Plus 5 km/h”. Disadvantage: Errors in recognizing signs with boundaries are unfortunately no exception. Meanwhile, some modern systems may automatically adopt so-called cruise control speed limits, or do so on demand.
5. Download the Speedometer app
Just like some mobile navigation systems, speedometer apps on smartphones measure speed using GPS. Often there is also an extreme warning that you can run alongside. Bonus possibility: Most speedometer apps can also display mirrored and even act as a head-up display.
