The exit of combustion engines is getting closer and closer at Mercedes. Only the next-generation E-Class will be launched with diesel and petrol engines. All other models are gradually being placed on a new e-platform.
“As things stand today, the E-Class with its derivatives is the last Mercedes-Benz model built on a pure combustion engine platform,” says Mercedes head of development Markus Schäfer in the trade journal “Automobilwoche”. All other models get a new platform with their generation switch – which has been specially developed for the electric drive. With the end of the upcoming E-Class, the end comes for pure diesel and petrol engines. There will be no combustion engines in Stuttgart by 2030 at the latest.
New E-Class coming in 2023
The new E-Class will be presented before the turn of the year and will be launched in the spring of 2023. It will be similar to the current S-Class, and will also have its air suspension and rear-axle steering, but not its large touchscreen in the cockpit. The combustion engines are already a bit electrified here; Thanks to the larger battery, the plug-in hybrid can drive up to 100 km without emissions.
Also in the spring, the sedan will be followed by a station wagon version. A somewhat more rustic all-terrain variant and the two-door CLE (as coupé and convertible) will be added later.
Already at the start of the new Euro 7 emission standard (probably 2025), Mercedes wants to reduce its engine range. Old engines are further developed, but new ones are no longer added. “We take the complexity out and significantly reduce the use of funds by only making adjustments for the remaining aggregates,” says Schäfer. To be at the forefront of future topics like artificial intelligence, you need to focus. “The future certainly doesn’t lie in ten different drives.”
