Fans of “House of the Dragon”, “Andor” and “Rings of Power” are currently in the same boat: they will all have to wait until 2024 for the second season to come out. HOTD’s season finale aired a week ago — HBO hit a record viewership since Game of Thrones — but season two won’t begin production until next year. HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed the start of the second season for “sometime 2024”.
The second season of the latest “Star Wars” spin-off “Andor” will also be the last. “I still have two years to go,” director Tony Gilory said. “We will shoot from November to August. And like the first season, post-production will probably take about a year.”
While none of these series has confirmed a release date, it’s clear that epic series are making their fans wait longer and longer for new episodes. For richly produced dramas, this has become almost standard. While many television networks are expected to produce a new season each year, certain series creators are taking the time to slow their production down to about every 16 to 24 months. Such productions often spend up to 10 months filming and then another 10 months to complete the visual effects in post-production.
However, the idea of a two-year hiatus is not entirely new. It took the makers of HBO’s “The Sopranos” two years to wrap up their final season in 2006. The visual effects-intensive “Westworld” has also left fans waiting two years between seasons since its launch in 2016.
But it was the final season of “Game of Thrones” that seemed to take a decisive turn. The first seven seasons of the 2011 fantasy drama were broadcast annually. Then fans waited two years for the final eighth season in 2019.
Netflix can top this. Fans have been waiting for the fourth season of “Stranger Things” for three years now. “With nine scripts, over 800 pages, nearly two years of filming, thousands of visual effects sessions and a runtime nearly double all previous seasons, Stranger Things 4 was the most challenging season yet,” said Creators Matt and Ross Duffer. . It should also be noted that the corona pandemic has led to production delays.
In August, the Duffer brothers began writing the fifth and final season. As such, filming is unlikely to start in 2023 at the earliest – and the season may not air until 2025.
The attitude of the broadcasters towards this trend appears to be one of hesitant acceptance. Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter in 2017 about the long wait for the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’: “As the series gets bigger and more complex, I have to trust the producers and let go of the idea that it would be nice to have it every year. and see the new season. They have to make the best series they can do.”
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said in an interview with Variety that she wants to release the second season of Rings of Power as soon as possible: “We want to keep the time between seasons as short as possible, but we want to keep the bar just as high. So we’ll do whatever it takes. We work fast.” She did not comment on a possible release date. The second season probably won’t be released before 2024.
Arguably, though, at least a little extra time between seasons isn’t a bad thing. At a time when 500 series are broadcast annually and all content is available anytime, anywhere, a longer wait for a new season can be an advantage. It gives potential fans more time to discover and catch up on the series while watching.
Also Jeff Schaffer, director of the series “Leave it, Larry!” believes that some time between seasons of a show can be good: “One of the things I always say to myself when we write a new season is, ‘Hey, I know last season ended really well and people really hated it. nice but it’s ok it will be another two years before they do [die Serie] meet again. You will forget. And they will be so happy to have us back.'”
