Tokyo, Paris or Detroit. These world metropolises have been chosen by automakers in the past to reveal their new models. So far, Geneva has been one of them. But this year, a hitherto unknown new place appears on the international auto scene: Zurich!
From 10 to 13 November 2022, two world premieres will be shown at Auto Zürich. British small series manufacturer Caterham and Swiss tuning specialist Sportec are exhibiting their new products for the first time in front of the audience at the Zurich Exhibition Centre. The British still keep a secret about their world premiere. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the small town of Dartford, a suburb of London on the south bank of the Thames.
What are the British planning?
Caterham is actually only known for the Seven, produced by sports car manufacturer Lotus. When production ceased due to money problems in 1972, Lotus dealer Graham Nearn from Caterham bought the rights and continued to manufacture the lightweight sports car under the Caterham name. Since then, the Seven has been revised over and over, but the core has remained the same. Attempts to launch their own model line with the Caterham 21 have been unsuccessful.
That’s why history shows that a new and revised version of the Seven will be showcased in Hall 3 at Auto Zurich. Caterham, on the other hand, has been owned by Japanese car dealer VT Holdings since March 2021. It is not yet clear whether he will have completely new ideas.
new car classic
Sportec definitely has that. The Swiss tuner from Höri ZH presents the “Ferdinand” project in Hall 7. This is a separate classic series. Sportec builds on the classic Porsche 964 (1989-1994) and transforms it into special one-off items at the customer’s request. The entire vehicle has been completely rebuilt, from the body to the interior, to the high-revving boxer engine.
Especially in the interior, Sportec makes its mark on Ferdinand. Many controls and switches are proprietary developments. This includes, among other things, the charging station for the smartphone. A modern multimedia system is also available. The result: the Ferdinand is a classic car with a new car feel. The first finished neo-classical celebrates its world premiere at Auto Zurich.
It also presents seven European premieres, currently Switzerland’s largest motor show. The most eye-catching is probably the new Koenigsegg CC850 – rockerless, with V8 biturbo and innovative automatic transmission with manual shift function. Honda, Hyundai and Mitsubishi are also showcasing the Civic Type R, Ioniq 6 and ASX models for the first time in Europe. The same applies to Dacia’s Bigster work and the revised Morgan Plus Four and Plus Six models.
