By 2023, the proportion of electric cars among newly registered cars in Switzerland will rise to around one in five, Comparis writes in an analysis published on Tuesday.
This is not because up to 22 percent lower insurance premiums have to be paid for fully battery electric cars compared to combustion engines. Comparis says the difference in insurance prices between electric cars and internal combustion engines is surprising because damage to an electric vehicle is generally more expensive than an internal combustion vehicle.
The biggest price difference in Ticino
This is probably due to the high cost and replacement of batteries. There is also disagreement within the industry about whether driving aids and sensors in electric cars will lead to fewer accidents.
In the comparison, Comparis examined the insurance premiums of six electric cars and six similar internal combustion engine models. The analysis also included other characteristics and factors such as the owner’s region, age, gender and car brand.
The biggest price differences for the Hyundai car brand were seen among young drivers in urban areas in Ticino. The average insurance premium for the Kona Electric model is 1,966 francs per year. For the Kona 2.0 model with an internal combustion engine, you have to pay 2,530 francs. This means the E model’s premium is 22 percent cheaper.
Gender has little effect
In the city of Zurich, young Hyundai drivers save 21 percent by paying 1,644 francs for the electric model and 2,091 francs for the internal combustion engine.
According to Comparis, the factor that causes the biggest differences in premium calculations is age. To give an example: In Bern, a 20-year-old Mini driver pays 1,221 francs in insurance premium, while a 30-year-old Mini driver pays 711 francs in insurance premium.
On the other hand, according to the analysis, gender has little effect on premiums. However, it is more expensive to insure a car in urban areas in Ticino and French-speaking Switzerland than in urban areas in German-speaking Switzerland. (SDA/obf)
