MG is ahead: Polestar’s convertible still has a long time to arrive, and there’s still no sign of the long-announced Tesla Roadster.

Car fans have always associated MG with stylish sports cars. But the resurrection of a classic roadster that fans have been longing for has been long awaited, following the acquisition of the old British brand by the powerful Chinese group SAIC a few years ago.

But the company’s management initially bowed to the zeitgeist and brought to Europe a wide range of electric SUVs, such as the MG4, MG ZS and MG Marvel R, which are sure to succeed. Now, just as MG’s 100th anniversary is approaching, the makers are heeding the calls of the fan base and putting the Cyberster, a stylish and of course all-electric roadster, on wheels. And since the MG will also be available in Switzerland from May, thanks to importer Astara, the convertible sports car is coming our way too!

The MG Cyberster will come in two variants: an entry-level version with rear-wheel drive and 340 hp (250 kW) and a top model with all-wheel drive and a brutal combined power of 544 hp (400 kW). Operated in this way, the two-seater will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and will probably reach a top speed of 210 km/h. Standard range should be a good 480 kilometers. The entry-level version weighs approximately 1,850 kilograms, while the top version weighs 1,985 kilograms, that is, just under the two-tonne barrier.

Understated design

With a length of 4.53 meters, a width of 1.91 meters and a height of 1.33 meters, British SAIC design boss Carl Gotham has managed to create not an elephant with a fabric hat, but a visually classic two-seater model. The proportions are correspondingly elegant: the MG Cyberster impresses with its long, straight bonnet and simple, curved lines that avoid excessive ostentation and aim to ensure optimum aerodynamics.

Two high-swing scissor doors provide access to the modern cockpit, which will be equipped with “state-of-the-art driving assistance systems” according to MG. However, it is not yet known whether the production version of the Roadster will have a forked steering wheel, reminiscent of spoke-by-wire steering, in the style of the Tesla Model S and X.

Is it older than Tesla’s Roadster?

The MG Cyberster is scheduled to be launched in Europe in spring 2024; well before the just-announced Tesla Roadster. However, the Cyberster will have less power than Tesla’s self-described “ultimate sports car”; This car is expected to reach 100 km/h in 2.1 seconds with almost 1000 hp and a top speed of over 400 km/h. On the other hand, the Cyberster will probably cost a fraction of the approximately $250,000 rumored for the Tesla Roadster in the US.

Advert

We start selling Cyberster in Switzerland starting from November. Prices have not been determined yet, but Blick estimates that the price will start around 60,000 francs.
