Lancia Ypsilon is a legend. Although the once-proud brand’s little Northern Italian has been on the rise over the years, last year it once again rose to third place among Italy’s best-selling vehicles, with sales of around 45,000 models. It has remained number one in its segment for years. Its long-awaited successor will be released at the end of summer. And as has been known for some time, this will initially be released as a fully electric vehicle.

A new look at familiar technology

The long-awaited new version is visually convincing: the short overhangs and the polarizing front end provide a modern Italian elegance, while the LED lights at the rear vaguely recall the charm of the cult Stratos model.

When it comes to drive technology, the new Lancia Ypsilon is based on the Stellantis Group’s e-CMP platform: the electric motor on the front axle, known from almost all compact sister models, produces 156 hp (115 kW) of power and a maximum torque of 115 kW. 260 Newton meters. The 54 kWh battery pack in the small electric car provides a range of approximately 400 kilometers. The 100 kW maximum charging speed is not quite up to date, meaning it takes more than 30 minutes to charge the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent.

In 2025, Lancia wants to add the sporty top version Ypsilon HF with 240 hp (177 kW), which accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. The newly introduced Abarth 600e, based on the new Fiat 600, also uses the same drive. A 100 hp (74 kW) gasoline engine version with mild hybrid technology will also be released.

Lancia plans until 2028

But the short 4.08-metre Ypsilon is expected to represent only the beginning of Lancia’s renaissance: it will be followed by two more electric models by 2028, with which Lancia wants to push towards the profitable premium segment. Unlike the Ypsilon, the larger models Gamma and Delta are powered solely by electricity. Lancia Gamma will be a hatchback sedan approximately 4.70 meters long in 2026 and will also be available as a four-wheel drive vehicle with extremely luxurious equipment. The big Lancia Delta will arrive in 2028. 70 Lancia centers are planned in Europe for the stylish marketing of premium segment vehicles.

The first series of Ypsilon is a blue special edition from luxury furniture manufacturer Cassina, limited to 1906 vehicles based on the year Lancia was founded. The specially designed interior also includes two 10.25-inch modern displays for the instruments and infotainment system. Something that will upset all local Lancia fans: Initially, the small car will only be available in its home country of Italy from next summer. It will probably take another year for Ypsilon to enter Switzerland. Prices are also likely to be high for a small car: in Italy, the special edition starts from 37,500 francs. For comparison: The price of the current Ypsilon starts at less than 17,000 francs in Italy.
