Netflix and Co. under criticism: The price increases for streaming services are so enormous

The streaming services in Switzerland around Netflix and Co. are offered, have increased their subscription prices dramatically in recent years. According to Moneyland.ch, sports fans in particular are having to dig deeper into their wallets.

We need to talk about sports streaming

According to the comparison platform, users of the sports streaming service Dazn had to absorb the highest price increase. According to the analysis published on Tuesday, the price of a monthly subscription rose by about 170 percent, or 22 francs, to 34.90 francs – almost tripling. For the sports streaming service Swisscom Blue Sport you now have to pay 49.90 francs per month, or 67 percent more.

What about Netflix and Co.?

But conventional streaming services for series and films also significantly increased prices. According to Moneyland.ch, price increases for Apple TV Plus amounted to 82 percent and for Disney Plus Premium 81 percent.

What does the expert say?

“The price increases for streaming services are enormous,” says Moneyland telecom expert Ralf Beyeler. Compared to inflation in Switzerland, prices have also risen much faster than general inflation.

This approach is consistent with the strategy of the streaming services: “First win new customers with low prices and then increase prices massively,” Beyeler explains.

And the quality?

When it comes to streaming services, however, it's not just the price that counts, says Beyeler. The selection of films and series is at least as important. There are also big differences between the different services, “because many streaming services advertise exclusive content. Many films and series are therefore only available on one streaming service.

It is striking that customers can choose between three subscriptions for Netflix and Disney Plus. The subscriptions would offer the same content, but mainly differ in image quality. “The cheaper subscriptions offer poorer resolution. The cheapest version of Disney Plus even includes commercials.”

“The differences in resolution are large. With HD (720p) there are only 921,600 pixels, while with 4K there are more than 8.3 million pixels. This makes the image nine times sharper. Shame: there's a great TV in the living room and then you watch videos of such poor quality."
How was it investigated?
For the analysis, moneyland.ch said it took into account the monthly subscription fees for new customers of paid video streaming services. These are offers that are sold independently of an internet and TV subscription (so-called OTT offers) and are aimed at customers in German-speaking Switzerland. Streaming services and media libraries from TV channels such as Playsuisse and Oneplus, as well as bundle offers with multiple streaming services, have not been taken into account.
