Until now, we knew Chinese tech giant Xiaomi primarily as a mobile phone provider; for example, the foldable mobile phone Xiaomi Mi Fold.

While the automotive industry in Europe and North America traditionally slows down during the holidays, China is in full swing. Not only do tech companies there use the end of the year for major product launches, but the automotive industry also likes to mix things up again. Nio always organizes its big Nio Day shortly before Christmas with major innovations. And now the technology giant Xiaomi, whose products surpass well-established companies such as Sony, Apple and Google in many areas, is causing a stir with its four-wheeled Primeur.

Contrary to what the SU7 model name suggests, Chinese technology giant Xiaomi’s first vehicle is not an SUV, but a stylish coupé sedan. It is expected to compete with models such as Audi E-Tron GT, Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S from the end of the year.

Xiaomi wants to enter the top five

For Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun (54), his company’s entry into the automotive industry is an important step: from just a smartphone to connecting people, cars and homes. «Xiaomi increased the development budget tenfold, starting from the development of basic core technologies to creating an extraordinary tool. Xiaomi aims to become one of the world’s five largest automakers in 15 to 20 years.

Lei Jun’s words should be taken seriously because Xiaomi is now one of the largest manufacturers of electronic home appliances and smartphones, just 13 years after the company was founded. Currently, 3,400 engineers and more than a thousand technical experts from a wide range of fields perform research and development for the group. Many of them have never had anything to do with cars until now.

Although Xiaomi doesn’t say it as clearly as some of its rivals, the SU7 is expected to be a smart device on wheels with maximum connectivity to play a central role in its owners’ daily life. The vehicle was developed with the help of renowned suppliers and manufactured by contract manufacturer BAIC in China.

Lots of power and range

The SU7 not only looks stylish but is also expected to be impressive in terms of driving technology. The electric drive of the top model produces 578 hp (425 kW) and 635 Nm. The electric four-door model accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 265 km/h. According to Xiaomi, the electric drive called “Hyper Engine V8” is a truly high-tech engine. When it comes to cooling, electric motors rely on a special system that is expected to provide a cooling effect of up to 30 degrees Celsius.

Other variants come as hypermotor V6 or V6s with 299 hp (220 kW) or 374 hp (275 kW). The electric motors on the front and rear axles in all models are powered by a specially developed battery pack. The particularly empty battery pack promises a theoretical range of over 1200 kilometers with a battery capacity of 150 kWh, at least in the Chinese consumption cycle.

Xiaomi models will also gradually be prepared for highly autonomous and later autonomous driving. However, you don’t notice this much in the interior of the SU7. While driving the vehicle, you are looking at a digital screen behind the steering wheel that is only 7.1 inches in size, and this is almost below the 56-inch head-up display on it.

There is another 16.1-inch central display for comfort functions and navigation, as well as two more holders in the seatbacks for displays. All five displays can be connected together using a chip with high computing power. During start-up, all functions on the displays must be available within 1.5 seconds after the doors are opened; This will be a comparison.

Now we are wondering when the Xiaomi SU7 will arrive in Europe and Switzerland and, above all, at what price. In any case, this has not been officially reported yet.
