The best-selling car in Switzerland is an electric car and it is not the Tesla Model 3

At the end of the year, Switzerland saw a boom in electric car sales. Never before have so many electric cars been sold in relation to the total market as in December 2023, as the Swiss trade association Emobility announced.

In December alone there were 7,185 new registrations of battery-electric plug-in vehicles. At the beginning of this year, 163,511 electric cars were registered on Swiss roads. Ten years ago there were still 2,700.

The market share of battery-electric cars increased last year from 17.3 to 20.9 percent. In contrast, the market shares of fossil combustion engines fell from 37.8 to 33.3 percent for gasoline and from 11.7 to 9.3 percent for diesel.

Nearly 17,000 charging stations

By 2023, approximately 4,000 public charging stations will be added in Switzerland. This means that there are 16,865 publicly accessible charging infrastructures available for electric cars. According to experts, Switzerland has one of the densest charging networks in the world.

The trade association still fears that Switzerland could lose touch with electromobility. Growth remains below expectations. Many European countries grew significantly faster than Switzerland, especially in Scandinavia and the Benelux countries. Switzerland will probably disappear from the top 10 countries. With the introduction of the car import tax for electric cars, Switzerland abolished the only market access facilitation on January 1.
