Porsche introduced the third generation of the Panamera luxury sedan in Shanghai; Blick was also there.

When the first Panamera was launched in 2009, one thing was particularly important to the then Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking (71), in addition to the sportiness that remained true to the brand: the 1.93 meter tall giant wanted to be able to sit comfortably in the back. Porsche’s first luxury sedan. The sports car manufacturer’s engineers solved the task correctly, although the design did not cause much applause among aesthetes. Now the all-new third generation is upon us, and truly major design leaps are missing. But if we look closer, we can see: front and rear bumpers, hood, trunk lid, fenders and doors, side window line – everything has been modernized and modernized.

Additionally, the LED light strip at the rear is now flat and the headlights (Matrix LED as standard, HD Matrix LED at additional cost) are more angular. 5.05 meters long, 1.94 meters wide and 1.42 meters high; It has the same dimensions as the previous model. The Executive version, which is 15 centimeters longer, is also included in this series. In the cockpit, the new Panamera is based on the revised Cayenne launched in the summer: In addition to the curved digital instruments and the 12.3-inch central touchscreen, Porsche now also offers a 10.9-inch passenger display as an option. The automatic transmission’s gear selector moves to the right of the steering wheel.

Two engine options

As for engines, the third Panamera in Switzerland will initially be available in two versions. The basic all-wheel drive version of the Panamera 4 is now powered by an improved 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 353 hp (+23 hp) and a maximum torque of 550 Nm (+50 Nm), with the sports sedan reaching 100 Nm. Acceleration to km/h took place in 4.8 seconds. The maximum speed reaches 270 km/h. The six-cylinder engine will later be available in a plug-in hybrid version.

The top version available is the Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid. According to Porsche, the “extensively revised” 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is mated to a new, more powerful electric motor producing 190 hp and is housed in a further improved 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. The total power of the plug-in hybrid system is 680 hp and 930 Nm. Panamera’s previous top model, the Turbo S E-Hybrid, had 680 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque. It can be assumed that Porsche will add a successor to the Turbo S steam cracker at a later date; this can produce a whopping 739 hp, as in the new Cayenne.

Up to 91 km electric

The current top Panamera accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, with theoretical forward acceleration ending at just 315 km/h. Electrically, the Turbo E-Hybrid can now travel up to 91 kilometers before the 25.9 kWh (previously 17.9 kWh) battery is discharged. It takes around two and a half hours to continue charging to full with the new 11 kW onboard charger. Designed for long journeys, the Panamera’s inability to use a fast charger (unlike the new Skoda Kodiaq or VW Tiguan) no longer keeps up with the times – especially in this price range.

New miracle chassis

The highlight of the new Panamera is the new super chassis called Porsche Active Ride. To solve the constant conflict between comfort and agility, engineers combine the single-chamber air spring with hydraulic shock absorbers that keep the body always horizontal and smoothly compensate for irregularities. There is a separate hydraulic pump for each wheel and a control unit on each axle to ensure lightning-fast and precise control. The new miracle chassis can keep the car’s body horizontal even when accelerating or braking suddenly, and can even compensate for pitching and rolling movements, almost like a motorcycle does when cornering. This delicate play with rebound and compression stages makes 48-volt roll stabilization unnecessary.

Advert

The fact that you can eliminate obstacles with the push of a button and that the chassis is pre-prepared for your next pass via GPS, and that the air springs lift the body by 55 millimeters when getting into the vehicle increases comfort. and out. Rear axle steering and familiar drive programs ensure even greater sportiness. However, the Porsche Active Ride chassis can initially only be ordered as an option for hybrid models. Two-chamber, two-valve air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is fitted as standard.

Panamera number three is available to order now; Deliveries will begin in March 2024. The entry-level version with a V6 gasoline engine and all-wheel drive starts at 136,100 francs. The top model, the Turbo E-Hybrid, costs almost 100,000 francs more, starting at 234,900 francs. Porsche will no longer offer a station wagon version called Sport Turismo for the third Panamera.
