I change my car tires in spring and summer. So are there really special winter tires for bicycles and e-bikes?
Doris Interbitzin, Wassen UR
Wet or winter road conditions are challenging for cyclists. If the bike slips on the road, leaves or ice, there is a risk of collision or fall. Depending on the material composition and profile, tires have more or less grip on slippery or wet roads. Skid resistance is important both when cornering and braking.
Studded tires also available
It is useful to wear winter tires on your bike, just like on your car. Slightly lower tire pressure further improves grip as the contact surface increases. You can also fit studded tires if you want to be on the safe side when it comes to snow and ice. But the disadvantages of winter equipment are slightly higher weight and increased rolling resistance. Studded tires also change driving behavior in corners, so caution is advised here.
Regardless of the season, the law requires that tires be durable, that is, not worn out and the fabric not visible. You should also look out for cracks, which are an indication of brittle tires. By the way, the rear wheel wears out faster than the front wheel. Damaged tires should be replaced.
