Riding – unfortunately currently only in the passenger seat or in the back. This is a prototype and it’s clearly from an early stage, as some features like the head-up display are missing. As for body details, this Polestar 4 looks far from production ready. So there is still a lot to do for developers – and yet everyone among the Chinese Swedes is eagerly awaiting the unusual SUV with electric drive, which will be released from 2024 as the stylish twin of the Polestar 3.

without rear glass

Test driver Sam steps on the gas near Santa Monica Airport (USA). And as always, you get a short but impressive tour of the electric crossover, which has no rear window as a design highlight. “With the Polestar Precept, we got a glimpse of a breathtaking new vehicle experience by ditching the rear window for the first time,” says Maximilian Missoni, Polestar’s chief designer.

The missing rear window no longer bothers Sam. “You get used to it quickly. There are exterior mirrors and a digital interior mirror.” The traffic behind our vehicle actually shines as brightly as ever, you don’t have to look at the rear headrests or be bothered by the high rear, but there is still a lack of sufficient light in the new Polestar model. Reason: Polestar 4 will be offered as standard with a wide panoramic roof that also illuminates the second row. Variable ambient lighting helps in the dark.

There’s lots of space in the back

The technical basis of the 4.84-meter-long crossover is the Premium Sustainable Experience Architecture developed by parent company Geely. Thanks to its three-meter wheelbase and closed rear wall, the electric model offers plenty of space for passengers, especially in the rear. The seats are comfortable and are positioned slightly rounded in the door elements. A second screen is mounted between the front seats for media and climate controls, allowing control from the rear seat.

The interior features sustainable materials and an optional Nappa leather package with headrest speakers, while it can be operated via audio or Google via the 15.4-inch central display. The driver looks at a 10.2-inch screen behind the steering wheel. Relevant updates can be installed over-the-air. Suspension setup is nice. Although the Swede rides hard, it lacks the tenacious, sporty toughness of the Polestar 2. “The Polestar 4 will have adjustable shock absorbers as standard on the all-wheel drive version,” smiles Sam, driving a little faster on Santa Monica’s bad roads.

600 kilometers range

When it comes to naming, things get a little confusing at Polestar. In terms of appearance and price (starting at around 60,000 francs) the new model fits almost perfectly between the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3. Production of the Polestar 4 is currently underway at the Hangzhou Bay factory in China. It shouldn’t stay this way. The electric model for the North American and South Korean markets comes from the Renault Korea Motors factory in Busan. “Since Polestar 3 is planned to go into production in Chengdu (China) in early 2024 and in South Carolina (USA) in summer 2024,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath (59), “we will go into production soon.” “We support our global growth targets by operating in five factories in three countries.”

We barely feel how well motorized the Polestar is during our brief drive from the passenger seat and back. The upper model, which has two electric motors on the front and rear axles, produces 544 hp (400 kW) power and 686 Nm maximum torque. The crossover, which weighs over two tons, reaches 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The basic version of Polestar 4 has 272 hp (200 kW) power and rear-wheel drive and can move thanks to a 102 kWh battery. 600 kilometers on a single charge.

The maximum charging speed is 200 kilowatts; More is not possible due to the lack of 800 volt technology. As the first Polestar designed for bi-directional charging, it can also provide electricity to other consumers. Polestar, together with its collaboration partner Store Dot, wants to bring XFC technology (Extreme Fast Charging) into series production in its four-door luxury coupe from 2025, which will enable a 160-kilometer range to be charged in five minutes. .
