This is the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63! At 4,728 metres, the second generation is almost 18 centimeters longer than its predecessor, as well as seven centimeters higher and 4.5 centimeters wider.

Yes, there are still cars that create excitement on their own. With the biker struggling up the winding mountain road, giving his thumbs up as he approaches. Or school children running a few meters back in the village to see and hear things for longer. GT 63 is a popular figure. At least in the Spanish provinces.

growth spurt

This should remain the case with the new generation that we can currently use. It may have gone wrong: The new AMG GT, built in Bremen and due for delivery from spring 2024, is 4.73 meters, that is, almost 18 centimeters longer than the previous model, so its height has increased by seven centimeters and its width by that much. 4.5. This had its consequences; he also became 300 pounds heavier.

It still remains beautiful and proportionate thanks to the deeper and wider radiator grille, narrow headlights, elongated bonnet and extendable rear spoiler. And a host of other technical advances ensure the GT 63 still moves as fast as it looks.

Optional with emergency seats

Thanks to the increase in length, two became four: the GT is now also available as a 2+2 seater. At a minimum, children should have adequate room in the second-row emergency seats. Since the backrests can be folded down, the normally 321-litre boot provides up to 675 liters of capacity. You can get in and out through the wide-opening doors without any major contortions, you won’t feel cramped despite the generous center tunnel, and the comfortable sports seats can be pushed well back, too.

Everything is elegant, everything fits together. The combination display in front of the driver is fully configurable and the optional head-up display offers space for the most important information. The 11.9-inch screen in the center console extends to the dashboard; This brings the navigation and infotainment screen into the driver’s field of vision.

The V8 gasoline engine under the hood, hand-assembled in Affalterbach, Germany, provides plenty of thrust. The four-liter twin-turbo engine produces 585 hp (430 kW) and 800 Nm of maximum torque from 2500 rpm. This provides plenty of power: it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and stops at 315 km/h, according to AMG.

Advert

If you don’t want it, the power doesn’t seem so cruel. The athlete can also be controlled very precisely while parking in front of the supermarket. Of course you’re thirsty: Mercedes states the average consumption as 14.1 liters per 100 kilometres. This rate is much higher with a driving style appropriate to the type.

complex technology

Whether it’s a parking lot or a winding mountain road: Many new technologies are available for trouble-free operation. The rear axle, which can steer up to 2.5 degrees, provides maneuverability despite being longer. Rolling movements are eliminated thanks to interconnected shock absorbers: the front left is connected to the front right via a hydraulic line. There is also a connection to the rear shock absorbers via a line running the length of the vehicle. A second circuit also connects the other sides of the damper chambers. Sound complicated? This. But it still works.

As standard, the Athlete features a variable all-wheel drive system that distributes the drive power between the front and rear axles in a ratio of 50:50 to 0:100, depending on the situation and constantly. There are six driving programs to choose from, which can be changed at any time using a button on the steering wheel. The nine-speed automatic shifts quickly. If you want, you can also change gears manually using the two large paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

Of course, as always, all this comes with a price. The price of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Coupé starts at 203,900 Swiss Francs and can be expanded as desired, thanks to the full list of options. A downsized version of the AMG GT will also be available as the GT 55 with 476 hp (350 kW) from summer 2024. So is it a roadster like its predecessor? No; Mercedes-AMG SL has been filling this role since 2022.
