Mega luxury balancing bell: The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is a product requested by customers as a tribute to large sailing yachts.

You want to experience billionaire worries like this: You spent more than half a million francs on a Rolls-Royce Phantom, and then the same car drives ahead of you on the Zurich Gold Coast. Shocking! For example, if you want to shine at the Supercar Owners Circle meeting in Andermatt RI, you need something more special to stand out from the sticky Bugattis of the plebs.

That’s why BMW subsidiary Rolls-Royce is now reflecting on its history and creating a new customer pampering department: Instead of the equivalent of the Dacia Duster, LED interior starry sky or “Emily” above the radiator for just under 4,000 francs Thanks to the lighting, you can now shape your body to your needs . This is a cost; please wait! – 25 million francs: Boat Tail is probably the most expensive new car of all time.

As coachbuilders once did

Custom bodies are not new. Once upon a time, this was not only a necessity but also part of the daily routine. Swiss body manufacturers such as Beutler, Graber and Tüscher were also at the forefront. But gradually self-supporting bodies ruined the principle of placing the body of your choice on a purchased chassis. For example, the American luxury car manufacturer Duesenberg died in 1937.

The Rolls-Royce Sweptail Coupe, requested by customers in 2017, showed what something like this looks like today. It wasn’t beautiful, but at least it was quite expensive: it was estimated at around twelve million francs at the time. Apparently the British got so many blank checks that it became a business model.

four wheeled yacht

Even more surprising is that the Boat Tail was built not just once but three times. And as you might expect, all three have already been sold. Rolls and three good customers spent four years designing this homage to a customer-owned 1932 Rolls-Royce Boat Tail and J-class sailing yachts. We suspect that all three owned such yachts in the style of the 1930s “America’s Cup” races, probably for 20 million francs each. These are the most exclusive sailboats: three out of ten are originals and a handful of replicas exist.

A 1:1 clay model was created from the sketches, then aluminum sheets were hand built around the V12. 1813 pieces were made specifically for the trio. The first luxury cruise goes to a couple who named their 1932 Rolls-Royce “Boat Tail”. His wish is said to be “a response to a life of hard work”: happiness with family. According to rumors, this person is expected to be the US superstar couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z. There are only rumors about the remaining two owners. Rolls-Royce, on the other hand, records the purchase price and remains silent as usual.

What we set the garden grill to is the 5.80-metre convertible, based on the Phantom, with blue paint covered in crystal flakes. The hood was hand dyed a contrasting blue. The interior is blue leather, the rear seats are lighter, like on yachts. A bright blue is embedded in the decorative parts at a 55-degree angle, creating a wave appearance.

Instead of the body, there are two shiny covers, under which snacks and champagne glasses are stored, and exquisite wines are stored in the refrigerator. Bottle holders are colored to match the bottles. Silver cutlery from Christofle: you treat yourself to nothing else. The boat tail is elegant. But umbrella? I’m sorry, but it looks a little silly. We’re almost surprised that Boat Tail doesn’t have a fireplace or a fountain spewing out gold coins.

A little Switzerland in Rolls

Even without that, the ostentatious opulence of the picnic cart costs 25 million francs. Depreciation is no problem: Vehicles such as the 13 million-franc Bugatti La Voiture Noire, considered the most expensive new car until Boat Tail, can later be auctioned at a higher price. And there’s a bit of Switzerland at the tail of the boat: convertibles are driven by his lordship or the newly rich man himself – designed in the style of Bovet’s watches from Geneva and including two wristwatches.

It is understood that Argentinian football player and star striker Mauro Icardi (30), who has just joined Galatasaray Istanbul, bought one of the three copies. A used purchase? Or was it one of the first three customers? Rolls-Royce certainly knows this and is keeping quiet.
