At first glance, the switch to electromobility costs much more than a new car with an internal combustion engine costs: Just a few years ago, the higher purchase price was the main reason Swiss people didn’t switch to an electric car.
But this is already outdated. In a panel discussion at the opening event of the E-Nova mobility trade fair held in the auditorium of the University of Economics and Business in Zurich, attendees agreed that poor charging infrastructure currently hinders the transition to e-mobility – first of all, boxes are missing in wall rental buildings. Homeowners have a duty.
Cost less trouble
On the other hand, a lot has improved in terms of costs and will continue to improve. Manuel Hug from e-scooter provider Sloflow sees new vehicle concepts in the future that will handle smaller and cheaper batteries thanks to their low weight. Krispin Romang, Managing Director of Swiss eMobility, does not believe that the cost issue stands in the way of electromobility either: “We know how valuable mobility is for Swiss people.”
Alberto Sanz de Lam of Swiss Marketplace Group pointed out that a second-hand market for electric cars is currently developing. Pricing is still tough: 40 percent of the car’s value is in the battery, and you need to learn to evaluate its performance when used. But soon you will be able to buy used electric cars that you may not be able to afford a new one.
Corinne Pellerin of Zurich Electricity Works even predicted money for Stromer owners: If e-cars help stabilize the electricity grid with bidirectional charging in the future, that will also be rewarded.
But where to start?
Participants at the podium disagreed on the focal points of Switzerland’s transformation towards sustainable mobility. Should smaller tools be used more often or should habits change? Should cities be redesigned and built to accommodate all forms of mobility and avoid daily traffic congestion? These questions should occupy us for a long time. The mobility fair E-Nova Mobility Experience at the Zurich Europaallee wants to give some answers by 2 July.
