If you want to win the 86th Tour de Suisse, you have to be a mountaineer. After arrivals in the mountains in Villars-sur-Ollon VD and Leukerbad BE, the king’s stage will follow on June 15 with the Furka, Oberalp and Albula passes.

However, there is a question mark about the toughest stage over 211 km from Fiesch VS to La Punt GR. When phase blue is declared in Brienz in Graubünden due to the imminent stone fall, the Tour de Suisse entourage cannot travel over the Albula to La Punt as planned. Plan B of the tour organizers would instead be the crossing over the Julier.

Top Swiss riders included

The most prominent riders on the provisional entry list are Belgian all-rounder Wout van Aert and British Olympic mountain biking champion Thomas Pidcock. With Gino Mäder, Marc Hirschi and Mauro Schmid and the time trial specialists Stefan Bissegger and Stefan Küng from Thurgau, the strongest Swiss will also be at the start of the state tour this year.

For European champions Bissegger and Küng, who finished second at the European and World Championships last year, the start of the tour on June 11 in Einsiedeln in the 12.7 km time trial is a great opportunity to not only win the day, but also to secure the yellow jersey. The Tour de Suisse also comes to an end with a time trial, which will take you from St. Gallen to Abtwil on June 18 over 25.7 km and 400 vertical meters.

The Women’s Tour de Suisse has gained WorldTour status this season. Marlen Reusser from Bern of the dominant team SD Worx starts with the ambition to win the four-day home tour (17 to 21 June). Also at the start is the number one in the world, Demi Vollering, a teammate of Reusser from the Netherlands. (SDA)
