Bundesliga club Cologne may bring in players next summer despite a FIFA penalty. As the club announced on Friday evening, the International Court of Arbitration for Sport CAS has temporarily suspended the imposed transfer ban. Until a decision in the appeal procedure, Cologne is “able to act”. The club writes that it cannot be said when a final judgment can be expected.

“The decision of the CAS to suspend the transfer ban is important for us. Now we can become active in the transfer market as part of our limited opportunities due to economic consolidation,” says Cologne director Christian Keller (46): “At the same time, we know that the suspension of the penalty is only a first step to avoid the transfer ban. We will therefore continue to work hard to avert the FIFA verdict completely.”

Cologne may contract and deploy players

The FIFA world federation has banned the Cologne team from signing new players for the next two substitution periods. The reason is the transfer of the then 16-year-old Slovenian Jaka Cuber Potocnik, who unilaterally canceled his contract with Olimpija Ljubljana in January 2022 and came to Cologne on a free transfer. The Slovenians accused the Cologne team of inciting breach of contract and filed a complaint with FIFA.

In addition to the transfer ban, the four-month suspension against Potocnik is also suspended. At the beginning of January, Leart Paqarada (28) was signed. The left back is allowed to move from St. Pauli to Cologne in the summer and is therefore eligible to play.

The possibility of transfers in the summer is also important for the Cologne side as two of the most important players will leave the club. Captain Jonas Hector (32) ends his career, midfield boss Ellyes Skhiri (28) is unlikely to extend his contract. (AFP/dti)
