FIS president Johan Eliasch wants to introduce the “FIS Games” in 2028.

In the near future, one big event will chase another in winter sports. Because: In a message ahead of the 54th FIS Congress, the World Ski Federation announced the 2028 “FIS Games”. This mega event will take place every four years. When there are no Olympic Games or World Championships.

WM, Olympia, WM, “FIS Games”

This means, for example, for the alpine ski cracks: next winter could be the last in which Marco Odermatt (25) and Co. only compete for important victories in the World Cup. In 2025, Saalbach-Hinterglemm (Austria) will compete for World Cup gold. Next year the Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy) are on the program. The next world championships are scheduled for 2027 in Crans-Montana USA. And then in five years these «FIS Games» will be held for the first time. A pretty decent program.

“This is sabotage!”

There is a risk of oversaturation. But chairman Johan Eliasch (61) sees it differently. “Every year there are ice hockey world championships. Wimbledon is also held every year, as is the Masters in Golf. I don’t see this problem,” he said in an interview with Blick in February 2023.

With the « FIS Games », the World Ski Association wants to cover the whole range of snow sports, to set up a kind of mini-Olympic Games (similar to the European Games in summer). According to the official timetable, interested organizers have until November 1 to submit a letter of intent. In the spring of 2024, the FIS council will make the final decision on the location. Because the FIS also wants to “be a pioneer in sustainability and inclusion”, as it says in a statement, existing competition venues will be used for the “FIS Games”.

16 days before the big event

“The FIS Games will be the biggest of all snow sports events; a groundbreaking celebration that will bring the FIS family together like never before. Over 16 days, the Games bring together the greatest talents from Olympic and non-Olympic sports – and of course also parasports. From alpine to freestyle, freeski and snowboard to nordic, telemark, speedski and freeride, the world’s best athletes will showcase their skills to a global audience. (SDA/yap)
