Norway surprises Canada with spectacular punishments

Norway celebrates their 3-2 shoot-out victory over Canada.

12 seconds before the end, Norway conceded the equalizer against Canada 2: 2. Déjà vu for Swiss hockey fans: The Norwegians almost experienced a drama similar to that of the national team at the 2019 World Cup when they had to accept the equalizer in the quarter-finals with 0.4 seconds left. But just, almost, in the end Norway wins 3:2. There are no goals in extra time, it goes to a penalty shootout.

And the Norwegians show great class, hitting four out of five shooters, one after the other making Canadian goalkeeper Joel Hofer look old. The Canadians for their part only get the puck past Jonas Arntzen twice, with the 3-2 victory after penalties the Scandinavians caused a surprise. It is only the second victory at a World Cup for the Norwegians against the Canadians.

Canada also suffered a player indiscipline in this game, with striker Adam Fantilli having to take a shower after a check to the head of a Norwegian defender in the second period.

Sweden sovereign after starting shock

In the second afternoon game, Sweden defeated Denmark 4-1. The “Tre Kronor” have to catch up after only four minutes, but do so confidently. Finally, the Danes must thank their goalkeeper George Sörensen, who managed to prevent a higher defeat with several great saves.

Denmark’s defeat makes a quarter-final between Switzerland and Germany increasingly likely. A German victory over France on Tuesday-afternoon would make the game clear. (nsa)
