Bad weather in Italy: Giro with problems

As the organizers announced shortly before the start of the race on Friday, the originally planned route of 199 km will be shortened to 74.6 km. The new start will be in Le Chable, the end of the stage will remain the same.

Two 1st category climbs remain, immediately after the start of the race it goes up to the Croix de Coeur (2714 m). After a descent follows the last ascent with arrival in the mountains in the Crans Montana ski area in the Swiss Alps (1456 m). The Gran San Bernardo, also a 1st category climb, is not part of the program.

Bad weather and corona infections

The stage’s route had previously been modified due to heavy snowfall and an increased avalanche risk. For the organizers of the Giro, the shortening is the next organizational challenge: the weather has been causing problems for a few days, and corona infections are also shaking up the field.

Danish ex-world champion Mads Pedersen was the 41st driver to retire on Friday. Earlier, world champion Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) had to withdraw.
