The first game of the semifinal series between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers will not be decided until just before the end of the fourth overtime period. The away team wins 3:2.
13 seconds before the fifth overtime would have started, Matthew Tkachuk scored the Panthers’ redeeming goal. Just before 02:00 local time, the 25-year-old American benefited from an adjustment error by the home team. The 79:47-minute overtime was the sixth-longest in NHL history.
Florida turned the game around in regular time thanks to a double in the 36th and 38th minutes. Carolina, the quarter-final conqueror of the Swiss Devils, equalized in the 44th minute with his second power play goal of the night. After two and a half minutes of the first extra time, the visitors’ supposed winner was called off due to goalkeeper interference.
