Rocco Grimaldi (30, United States)
The Californian, who is only 1.68 meters tall, is perfect for Swiss ice hockey and has what it takes to become a crowd favorite in no time. He is fast and agile and extremely snappy when chasing the puck. And last season, he recorded more points (73 in 70 games) and goals (33) than ever before in the AHL with the San Diego Gulls and most recently with the Rockford IceHogs. The man with the wonderful-sounding name has played 214 NHL games (71 points) for Florida, Colorado and Nashville – he even scored four goals for the Predators in a game against Detroit in 2021. He is now 30 years old and has first since 2014 no assignments received in the best league in the world. The legal shooter’s AHL contract expires. The ZSC Lions, who still have three offensive positions open, have the greatest need for foreign strikers.
Jussi Olkinuora (32, Finland)
The Olympic champion and two-time world champion has had an eventful year. After the excellent World Cup a year ago, the goalkeeper signed with Biel, but then dropped out when Detroit offered him an NHL contract. While the Seelanders were instead happy with Harri Säteri, Olkinuora was unable to assert himself with the Red Wings and only made 15 appearances with the farm team in Grand Rapids. Therefore, he moved to Sweden, where he could not prevent Brynäs’ relegation. Most recently he was associated with SC Bern and the Swedish MoDo. He recently stressed to the Finnish newspaper “Iltalehti” that he has not yet signed with any club.
Christian Heljanko (26, FI)
Another Finnish national goalkeeper who could qualify for SCB should he not make the intended move to the NHL. This season, six-foot-tall goalie Tappara led Tampere to their second straight championship title (93.5 percent save rate in the playoffs) and triumphed in the Champions Hockey League (95.1 percent), where the man with showman- qualities until MVP was chosen. He has not yet played at the World Cup.
Jonathan Pudas (30, SD)
It is not the first time that the attacking defender has been linked with a departure to Switzerland. Pudas has already spent a season abroad. But at Jokerit Helsinki, he was not as productive in the 2020/21 KHL as before and after in Sweden. This season he was the top scorer with 45 points (11 goals) from 50 games at number two Skelleftea, where he also played with the new Zug striker Andreas Wingerli. In the National League there are Davos, Lugano, Bern, but ex-Lausanne defender Petteri Lindbohm (29, Frölunda) would fit the profile better and Ajoie is looking for a foreign defender.
Ville Pokka (28, Fi)
The smart two-way defenseman was drafted by the New York Islanders as No. 34 in the 2012 NHL draft and played four seasons in North America, only appearing in the AHL (300 games, 142 points) in Rockford and Belleville. He then played four seasons in Omsk (champion of 2021) before leaving Russia just after the start of the war. Pokka was part of the Finnish team for both the Olympic and World Championship gold medals last year. The right-handed shooter spent last season in Sweden, scoring 22 points in 49 games with Färjestad.
Walteri Merela (24, Fi)
Finnish national strikers are in great demand in Switzerland. Merelä does not yet play in the National League. Like his clubmate Heljanko, the massive striker of Champions League winner Tappara Tampere has not yet played for his own audience at the World Cup. But after it became clear that no other NHL star would join the team, he reported on Tuesday. With eight goals, the right winger was the top scorer of the Finnish play-offs.
Michael Carcone (26, Ka)
Unlike Grimaldi, Carcone should still have hope for a future in the NHL, especially since he’s no longer tied to a club as an “unrestricted free agent.” For reference, the 5’7″ forward, who turns 27 on Friday, has had a stellar season with the Tucson Roadrunners. With 85 points and 31 goals in 65 games, he was the leading scorer in the AHL. In the NHL, the aggressive forward has , who has 127 penalty minutes this season, 30 games (9 points) for the Arizona Coyotes.
