Many stars don’t feel like going to the World Cup

Despite the Pittsburgh Penguins missing the playoffs for the first time in 16 years, Sidney Crosby is missing from Canada’s World Cup squad.

294 Canadians played in the NHL this season. Still, there are five players in the ice hockey motherland’s World Cup team who had to struggle with the AHL farm teams this season, as well as storm talent Adam Fantilli (18) from the American college league. The picture is even clearer in the US (202 NHL players), where 14 players from the World Cup squad were active in the AHL or at a university.

If you look at the score list of the last NHL season, with the Finn Mikko Rantanen (Colorado) only one of the top 30 has been able to warm up for the World Cup. Stars like David Pastrnak (Tsch, Boston), Nathan MacKinnon (Ka, Colorado), Erik Karlsson (Sd, San Jose), Sidney Crosby (Ka, Pittsburgh) or Tim Stützle (De, Ottawa) will not be there. The Russian stars are also missing because their national team was put on hold due to the war in Ukraine.

Switzerland still hopes for Fiala

Many top players are either injured and are therefore not fired by their clubs, are tired or do not feel like playing another World Cup after a tough season. In addition to the uncertain situation in Europe – World Cup hosts Latvia and Finland border war-torn Russia – and the World Cup calendar, the appeal of the World Cup may have diminished. Since 2019, the tournament starts a week later and attracts fewer top scorers.

There are also cancellations with the national team, but no motivation problems with the NHL stars. They will come if at all possible. Injuries led to the cancellations of Philipp Kurashev (Chicago) and Pius Suter (Detroit). Roman Josi had to die last year because his wife Ellie was heavily pregnant. This time, the Nashville captain fell out with a concussion in the final stages of the season, unfortunately not the first time, and had to use common sense and cancel again with a heavy heart.

There is hope that the injured Kevin Fiala (Los Angeles) will make it if the medical tests are positive.
