Artificial intelligence, or AI for short, is the tech fashion word of the watch. Since the launch of ChatGPT accompanied by real excitement and Microsoft is responsible, rival Google has been under pressure. At the I/O developer conference in Mountainview (US), Sundar Pichai (50), CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet, has now set the direction.
“We are in the process of redesigning all of our core products, including search,” Pichai said.
The launch of the “Bard” chatbot in 180 countries aroused particular interest, although for now it does not include Switzerland. The Bard itself is not new; But what’s new is its integration with services like Google Search and Google Workspace.
What does this mean?
According to Pichai, the effect of generative artificial intelligence can be seen, for example, in the mail service Gmail. This can create new message drafts. Typing Assist is basically an extension of the auto-replies that already exist in Gmail.
Pichai gave the example of asking an airline for a refund on a flight when announcing the feature. The AI function uses information from previous contacts with the airline and generates a complete message asking for a refund. This message can be edited before sending.

Another example is on Google Photos. There, AI can be used to make changes to images, such as centering figures and coloring empty spaces.
These apps are part of the office software Google Workspace. This now allows working not only with other humans, but also with AI in real time. New features help users write, organize, visualize and speed up their workflow. The general term for the growing list of artificial intelligence functions in Google Workspace apps is “Duet AI”.
Smarter Search
Traditional Google search is a mix of the tried-and-tested and the new. A simple query like “Bern Weather” will still show the tabular weather forecast for the next 8 days. However, if you ask how you would dress to visit Bern on a given date, there will be long AI-generated answers with helpful hints.
Basically, complex queries that had to be gathered in a few search steps beforehand – “Which national park is better for a visit with kids, Bryce Canyon or Arches?” – significantly simplified. Follow-up questions are possible, which can be asked in a new conversation mode. Context is transferred from question to question. This opens up new possibilities in multiple segments, from travel planning and shopping to administrative research.
The prompts given to Bard are no longer just text but also images. For example, in the future Bard will be able to write a caption for an entered image.
Smartphone getting smarter
That’s not all the news. With the “Pixel Fold”, Google also introduced the first foldable mobile phone with two screens that can be operated independently of each other, similar to PCs. In addition, the mobile phone must have an adaptive battery that optimizes the power consumption of the battery depending on the application usage.
There are also innovations in the Android operating system, where many productive AIs are also integrated. Or MusicLM, a software that converts text input to music output thanks to AI.
Unfortunately, Google could not give an exact date for the launch of many innovations. What is clear is that the way we work and our technological interactions with each other will soon look very different.
