Traditionally, there are gold helmets for everyone in Sweden after the decisive victory for the championship title, including Växjö coach Jörgen Jönsson.

Everything he touches turns to gold. In his native Sweden, Jörgen Jönsson (50) is now celebrated as a successful coach. In his debut season as head coach, he won the national title.

Instead of underdogs, Jönsson’s Växjö Lakers go into the final series against Skelleftea – winning 4-1. Traditionally, after the decisive victory, golden helmets are distributed to the players. And Jönsson comes to the TV interview with Cmore with tears in his eyes and says, “It’s just fantastic.”

When asked by the reporter if winning the title as head coach was more special than his previous ones as assistant coach, the redhead replies, “No, every journey to the title was special, every team was special, so every championship title is special. ” just fantastic in itself.”

Impressive gold collection

People in his home country are impressed by Jönsson’s golden blessing. Because: this championship medal is already the twelfth gold in his career. As a player, the ex-striker won five national SHL titles with Färjestad, two world championship gold medals and two Olympic gold medals with the “Tre Kronor”. As an assistant coach he was involved in two championship titles in Färjestad and Växjö. And now he is celebrating his debut as head coach.

It wasn’t until this season that he took over the Växjö Lakers after spending a year with HC Davos as an assistant to coach Christian Wohlwend. Jönsson did not pass up the opportunity for his first job as head coach at home and therefore left Graubünden after just one season. Because of this opportunity, as well as family reasons, he terminated his contract with HCD early.

The Växjö Lakers celebrated – or are still celebrating – their fourth title in the club’s history in the past eight years with the motto “Top Gun” in an airport hangar.
