Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz won his ninth title in his career at the Barcelona ATP tournament. In the final of the clay tournament, the world number two from Spain won 6: 3, 6: 4 against the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 19-year-old Alcaraz celebrated his third tournament victory this year.
“I made the game I wanted to make. The goal was to stay relaxed,” said Alcaraz, who admitted to being nervous before the game: “I worked with my psychologist to try and enjoy the final and that it worked.”
Alcaraz had previously run effortlessly through the tournament without losing a set. Also in the final, Tsitsipas (24) had nothing against the power tennis of the US Open winner and he had to give up his service three times. Alcaraz, on the other hand, convinced with a good rate at the first storage.
The Spaniard previously triumphed at the clay court tournament in Buenos Aires and at the hard court masters in Indian Wells. He only had to admit defeat in the final in Rio and in the semi-final in Miami. Alcaraz missed the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open, due to an injury. But now he is one of the favorites for the title at the French Open in Paris (from May 28), where he had to admit defeat to Olympic champion Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals last year. (AFP)
