Torstein Traeen finished second on stage four of the Tour of the Alps.

The fourth stage of the Tour of the Alps was dominated by riders with a dramatic medical history. On the one hand there was stage winner Gregor Mühlberger (29), who celebrated his first victory since his meningitis. On the other hand, second placed Torstein Traeen (27) is having a hard time.

In the finish area, the Norwegian told the Dutch cycling portal “Wielerflash” why the race was special for him: “I had cancer here last year – without knowing it. It is special to be back now.”

That Traeen already suffered from cancer at the last edition of the Tour of the Alps is astonishing, especially when you look at last year’s results. Because despite the serious illness, the driver of the Uno-X team finished fifth on the final day.

First suspicion at doping control

After a doping test in 2022, Traeen was advised to go to the doctor because of “worrying blood results”. He eventually diagnosed testicular cancer in the professional athlete.

Only two months after diagnosis, the tumor could be removed thanks to a successful operation. “Fortunately, the operation was successful and I will soon be able to get back on the bike full throttle,” Traeen said at the time.

What he means by that, he once again showed impressively in the Tour of the Alps. (byl)
