Blick: Peter Zeidler, after Sunday’s defeat to Winterthur, you declared a relegation battle…
Peter Zeidler: I’m glad you got into that. I would like to put it differently and rather talk about the game for relegation. This is a semantic difference without drifting too far into the philological level. I don’t like the term relegation battle. We weren’t supposed to eat grass or anything like that. But everyone knows what is meant. It is also about FC St. Gallen continuing to play in the Super League next season.
With eight rounds to go they are seven points ahead of 10th place. It would be hell if St. Gallen still falls on the Barrage-Platz.
I dare to go out the window and say that while there are never guarantees in football, we certainly can. We don’t get frantic or nervous. But it is a special season, because the gap between 3rd and 10th place has never been smaller. In the end, the bottom of the table will probably have as many points as it has never had in the last 20 years. That is why we would do well to start scoring again soon.
Do you train differently when you play against relegation?
No. We don’t do fundamental things differently. It’s about sharpening the senses and training with even more concentration. But we continue to enjoy football and our colleagues, there is no difference. But we understand how important it is to play in front of a full stadium and lose to the last team. Then you can’t just look past it and say nothing happened.
For the first time this season, the fans also whistled.
That happened once a season, except when we finished second. But the fans can also say that today was not good and we are not satisfied. But they will come back. And we need that too. We attach great importance to the relationship with the fans because they are a big part of FC St. Gallen’s identity. This has many advantages, but also comes with a certain responsibility. If something like that happens in Monaco, maybe not many people are interested, but it’s a problem here.
Does the large home crowd provide extra pressure for an almost sold-out stadium?
Pressure is a difficult term. But of course there is the expectation that we play well, win and be in the top half of the table. Dealing with high expectations is quite a task. You need to channel this emotionality, make sure you are disciplined and focused and stay focused. But we as a club also have our goals, we don’t just want to play in the Super League. But after a home defeat against the latter you can’t talk about the Champions League, that doesn’t fit at the moment. That’s my message. Let’s focus on the game and get points as soon as possible.
Do you have an explanation for the meager four points from the last six games?
I don’t want to bring up our failures because that sounds like an excuse. And other teams have them too. But especially in the attack, with von Moos, Guillemenot, Akolo, Latte Lath, Besio and of course Schubert, some taller players were missing. I thought it would be faster for other injured players to get back into top form.
It is strange that more than half of the league plays both against relegation and for the European Cup places.
Yes, but that’s the ten league. In 2019 we secured relegation on the penultimate day. On the last day in Zurich we finished sixth with a draw instead of a win. It can be that close again this time. Lucerne shows how fast things can go. Floodlights, 14,000 spectators, a good game against Zurich and a little euphoria breaks out.
You watched the game against Winterthur from the stands because of your suspension. How was that experience?
I said I want to experience this twice: the first time and the last time. I would have loved to do without, but I checked it off. It won’t happen to me again. The team needs me, I need them. But that doesn’t mean she would have won with me on the phone. That would be disrespectful to Winterthur and arrogant on my part.
Now it’s on to the FCZ, which has the knife even more on its neck.
We often looked good, but against them we also looked bad. Two of their best players, Tosin and Guerrero, have been missing for a long time. Like us, they have fans with strong voices who support the team. It’s going to be a great, emotional game. From now on, every game revolves around everything – except YB.
