Pep Guardiola’s time at Manchester City will be measured by whether he manages to win the Champions League, some say.

Pep Guardiola’s Palmarès (52) is a nice read. Wherever the Spaniard has gone, he has left his mark in the form of style of play and, most importantly, trophies. With Barcelona. With Bayern Munich. With Manchester City. No wonder he is repeatedly touted as the best current coach.

But while Guardiola’s trophy cabinet is so pompously decorated, there are critics who have something to complain about. This is the main club competition. The Champions League, which he won with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011. The memories of it are a bit faded.

Billions spent and still no triumph

Since leaving Catalonia, Guardiola has tried nine times to win the Champions League with Bayern Munich and Manchester City. He has always failed. Once in the final. Four times in the semifinals. Three times in the quarterfinals. Once in the round of 16. Too many times for the critics. Especially since he always had the most expensive team.

Sheikh Mansour has already invested over a billion euros in transfers to succeed in the Champions League. The account has not yet been worked out. It has long been clear to Guardiola that his time at Manchester City will be measured by whether he wins this match. “I’ve known that since my very first game here,” he said a few weeks ago. But he certainly wasn’t of the same opinion, he assured.

This year, the Citizens are once again on the verge of reaching the semifinals. They go into the second leg of the quarter-finals against Bayern Munich with a 3-0 lead. At the seventh attempt with City it should finally succeed with total triumph. Or will Guardiola again be doomed by his constant pursuit of perfection? After all, he has failed miserably several times because he deviated from his line at crucial moments. Wednesday evening there will be a first answer.
