The Bundesliga experts are concerned with the centimeter question: is Yann Sommer too short for international top football at 1.83 meters? For years, the national goalkeeper proved otherwise – whether at the world championships or at the EM 2021 when he guided the national team to the quarter-finals. It is not for nothing that Blick columnist Kubilay Türkyilmaz says about the discussion: “This polemic is downright dubious, meaningless, even stupid. Yann has been in goal for 15 years and has never been bigger. And now they suddenly find out that he is too small? Please!”
But it is also clear: Yann Sommer is an exception in international football. He is the shortest goalkeeper to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League this season (see chart).
The development is impressive: Blick has been analyzing the quarterfinal keepers since 1993, when the premier class was introduced. The average rises from 1.85 meters then to over 1.92 meters (2008). In 2023, the goalkeepers in the top 8 of the Champions League will be an average of 1.90 meters tall.
Sommer is the smallest, the tallest is the Belgian Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid with 1.99 meters. (abo/md)
