New Jersey wins after brilliant comeback

The New Jersey Devils retire from the NHL playoffs with a victory. Despite a brilliant comeback against the Washington Capitals, they miss out on the group victory in the Metropolitan Division.

More than 21 minutes had been played when Washington made it 4-1 and replaced New Jersey goalkeeper Mackenzie Blackwood with Switzerland’s Akira Schmid. The 22-year-old from Emmental makes his first appearance since March 24 and his 18th appearance this season for the Devils – and as a result he is unbeatable, saving all 20 shots on target. For this, his frontmen scored three runs and saved the Devils in overtime.

Hischier skorts more often than ever

There defender Luke Hughes eventually becomes a celebrated man. 27 seconds before the end of extra time and on the instructions of his older brother Jack Hughes, he crowned the Devils’ strong drive to overtake the goal to make it 5:4. Captain Nico Hischier credited the second assist to the 19-year-old American’s first NHL goal. With that, the Valais concludes a strong qualification with exactly 80 scorer points (31 goals, 49 assists). He’s never been so productive.

New Jersey’s 52nd win in 82 games is ultimately of little value, as the Carolina Hurricanes defended their 1st place in the metropolitan division with a 6-4 victory over the Florida Panthers. Now the Devils will meet the New York Rangers in the playoff round of 16 and enjoy home field advantage.

Malgin’s 13th joke

The night was also successful for Denis Malgin, who scored his 13th goal of the season in the Colorado Avalanche’s 4-2 home win over Nino Niederreiter’s Winnipeg Jets. Last year’s Stanley Cup winners from Denver could still win the Central Division with a victory against the Nashville Predators.

The final game of the season was a sobering one for Pius Suter and the Detroit Red Wings, who conceded their fifth consecutive loss in a 5-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. (SDA)
