Felix Aellen was the celebrated man in the Bernese team. The backcourt, who had not excelled as an efficient shooter before, scored the decisive goal for the guests a few seconds before the end. They almost gambled away their good starting position – Bern led with four goals eight minutes before the end – in the nervous final phase. Finally, the fifth in the qualifying table was able to celebrate the break at the start of the quarter-final series.

Scout Winterthur also had to tremble. In a hard-fought duel with a disciplinary exclusion on both sides, the home team defeated Wacker Thun 19:18. Noam Leopold had scored the winning goal more than a minute before the end. The guests then failed all attack attempts and were unable to force an overtime.

Qualifier winner Kriens-Luzern showed no weaknesses. He won the home game against St. Otmar St. Gallen 32:26. The team led by Andy Schmid built up a five-goal lead before the break and confidently defended it in the second round.
