Robert Lewandowski (34) inspires on the football fields with his feeling for the ball and his goals. He also did that at the 2016 European Championship. With Poland, he knocked Switzerland out in the round of 16 (5:4 nP) and failed in the quarterfinals against Portugal in a penalty shoot-out.
What no one knew at the time was that focusing on football was anything but easy for Lewandowski. During this time, he had to deal with a private blow of fate. In his documentary, available on Amazon in Poland since the end of March, he reveals that his wife Anna had a miscarriage shortly before the tournament.
“The viewers had no idea”
Lewandowski talks about it with the “Sportbild”. “It was a bad situation for us as a family,” he says. “The time before that was very difficult: I had to concentrate on football somehow, but I always had a much more important subject on my mind. The viewers had no idea, they just expected me to score and just Robert would are.”
Flipping the switch and being fully present on the field was a big challenge. He mastered this given the result. A year later, there was cause for joy in the family. Daughter Klara was born in 2017, followed in 2020 by her sister Laura.
Lost father at age 16
The miscarriage isn’t the only fate Lewandowski endured. He was only 16 when his father Krzysztof died of cancer in 2004. “I had to go the whole way without him – as a footballer and as a person. Those conversations that only exist between father and son – I missed that, I missed that,” he admits.
In the documentary he shows how close the loss is to him. When he talks about it, tears come to his eyes. The Pole, who has been playing for FC Barcelona since last summer, has never been more private and emotional. There was no time pressure, he spoke for a long time about his father’s death, so emotions ran high. He still thinks about him often and “before the games always imagine him having the best seat in the stadium and watching me”.
