It bangs again and again. The potential for violence is always shocking. You always want to change something. Nothing happens over and over again. The football chaos has Switzerland in a stranglehold! The most recent case: Tuesday after the match between FC Basel and Young Boys Bern, four employees of a security company of the stadium operator were physically attacked by masked people in front of the stadium after the match. Three security guards were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Another person suffered minor injuries, police said.
According to the Basel-Stadt cantonal police, about 100 masked FCB fans had gathered in front of the stadium on Wednesday evening. A smaller group intercepted and attacked the employees of the stadium operator’s security company. Some managed to escape, but four of the employees were attacked with objects. Police resorted to coercive measures to protect and rescue those attacked. Two people were arrested.
It is not the first time that football fans misbehave en masse and do not shy away from violence. In the chronology of fan shame, Blick lists the most notable cases of recent years.
The shame of Basel
On May 13, 2006, one of the darkest chapters in Swiss football history is being written at the St. Jakob Stadium in Basel: the disgrace of Basel. FC Basel plays against FC Zurich in the Joggeli. 90 minutes are played. It’s 1:1. The championship trophy is within reach for FCB. But then, the 93rd minute: Throw-in for FCZ, cross through the middle, goal! FCZ wins. A bitter pill for FCB. Dozens of Basel fans storm onto the lawn from the Muttenzerbocht. Petards are ignited, FCZ players attacked. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets. The situation escalates. The sad result: 115 injured and more than 400,000 francs material damage.
The Battle of Aarau
May 15, 2014: After the final whistle of the Super League match between FC Basel and FC Aarau, the “Battle of Aarau” erupts in Aarau. Despite the 3-1 win and thus the fifth league title in a row, the partially concealed Basel chaos stormed the field. The Brügglifeld stadium becomes a battlefield. Plumes of smoke are ignited, Aarau fans are attacked. The situation between the chaos of the two opposing teams is so critical that the police, who otherwise only ensure order and peace outside the stadium, have to intervene. Rubber shot is fired. Several people were injured in the riots and there was significant damage to property.
Storming the catacombs in Zurich
May 25, 2016: A black day for FC Zurich. Despite the 3-1 win over Vaduz (Li), the Zurich football club has been relegated for the first time in 26 years. Disappointment and anger spread. About 60 masked FCZ ultras storm the catacombs in Letzigrund. State of emergency! The players of FCZ barricade themselves in the cabin. Former FCZ coach Uli Forte (45) is taking flight. The FCZ fans gave free rein to their frustration and then rioted in the center of Zurich.
Riot at the cup final in Bern
May 27, 2018: FC Zürich beat the Young Boys 2-1 at the Stade de Suisse in Bern. But Zurich’s cup victory is overshadowed by wild scenes off the pitch. Ultras from both camps riot in the city, causing pyros and petards. There are several injured. In addition, FCZ mayhem attacked a Coop gas station. Property damage and the amount of the crime amount to several thousand francs.
The shame of Lucerne
May 20, 2019: Match canceled in the Swissporarena! The match between Grasshopper Club Zürich and FC Luzern had to be abandoned in the 67th minute. The score is 4-0 – GC’s relegation is inevitable. The fuses blow on the GC Ultras – again. They storm the field, led by renowned GC neo-Nazi Ultra and leader Stefan N.*, demanding the jerseys from the players.
Escalation at the Zurich Derby
October 23, 2021: After the final whistle, there are wild scenes in the derby between FCZ and GC. Chaotic FCZ people throw pyros in the opposite sector. The GC fans then manage to shoot the fireworks back again. Children save themselves to safety, on the racetrack of Zurich Letzigrund there are fights between several chaotic hooded people. The scenes are reminiscent of the Zurich embarrassment in 2011, when FCZ fans threw two 2,000-degree hot flares into the GC curve.
