UEFA tournaments
UEFA has so far held twelve tournaments in Switzerland. Four for men and eight for women.
European Championship 2008 (men)
Switzerland hosts the big event Euro 2008 together with Austria. Both hosts are eliminated in the group stage. In the final in Vienna, Spain defeated Germany and heralded the era of winning three tournaments (including the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship). Memorable in Switzerland: how the Dutch fans turn Bern into an Orange festival hut for weeks.
2002 U21 European Championship (men)
Switzerland, with players like Alex Frei, Ludovic Magnin, Ricardo Cabanas and Daniel Gygax, provide a bit of euphoria as “titans” with their advance to the semi-finals. There, the team of trainer Bernard Challandes fails against France, which loses the final in Joggeli via penalties to the Czech Republic.
U19 European Championship 2018 (women)
It is played in Biel BE, Wohlen AG, Yverdon VD and Zug. Switzerland competes with current senior internationals Géraldine Reuteler and Alisha Lehmann and narrowly fails in the group stage. The title goes to Spain.
U19 European Championship 2006 (women)
The Swiss talents beat ZH Holland in Winterthur but are eliminated in the group stage. Germany wins the final in Neufeld in Bern.
2004 U19 European Championship (men)
Switzerland with players like Johan Djourou, Valon Behrami and Blerim Dzemaili wins the group. Then the Nati fails in the semifinals in Freiburg in extra time against Turkey, which loses to Spain in the final in Nyon VD. There is no rank 3 game.
U17 European Championship 2008 to 2013 (women)
The U17 European Women’s Championship has only existed since 2008. The first six events take place as mini-tournaments with the top four teams and always at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon VD. That is why the SFV is not the organizer, but UEFA itself. The Swiss qualify for the final in 2012, but lose the semi-finals and the game for third place.
1991 U16 European Championship (men)
Today’s U17 European Championship was held as a U16 tournament until 2001. In 1991, 22 Swiss cities (!) from Baar ZG via Hochdorf LU to Vevey VD held the tournament. Winner in Wankdorf: Spain. Switzerland was out with one point after three group matches (1:1 against Poland in Zofingen AG).
FIFA tournaments
Switzerland has only won a FIFA tournament twice. However, one of them always took place in Switzerland at all its events.
1954 World Cup (men)
It is the legendary miracle of Bern, when Germany defeats the seemingly overwhelming Hungary in Wankdorf and becomes world champion for the first time. Switzerland also enters the history books. The heated battle in the 5:7 in the quarterfinals in Lausanne VD against Austria is the highest scoring World Cup match to date.
Blue Stars FIFA Youth Cup
A special case in every way. The international youth club tournament has been held in Switzerland since 1939. Every year, the U19 juniors from renowned clubs compete for victory in Auffahrt in Zurich-Altstetten. The U19 women have also been there since 2018.
