The race
The new Swiss downhill champion is Justin Murisier. With starting number two, the Valais drives a strong race, nobody can match him. For example, defending champion and one of the top favorites, Niels Hintermann, lost a lot of time. The 27-year-old from Zurich is no less than 1.89 seconds behind at the finish, which ultimately means an 8th place. Gino Caviezel is sitting right in front of Hintermann with number 46.
After the weather stoppage (see “That gave me something to talk about”), almost all athletes, including World Cup riders Stefan Rogentin (12th) and Gilles Roulin (47th), lost more than two seconds. Not so Gael Zulauf. The 22-year-old from Vaud, who finished in the top 5 in the European Cup for the first time in February, takes more than seven-tenths from Hintermann and moved up to bronze.
Second went to Arnaud Boisset, who opened the race and was the only one to lose less than a second to Murisier. Born in Valais, he rode to his first two European Cup wins in February (Garmisch, DE) and March (Narvik, No), but in Super-G.
That gave me something to talk about: the terms
A gray cloud cover hangs above the Valais Alps. Rain or snow was not really the order of the day. The race is stopped after six drivers. First to repair the spot where Christophe Torrent (No. 3) and Alessio Miggiano (No. 6) retired. But then it starts to snow more and more, the visibility gets worse. The stoppage lasts a full 40 minutes before the race can continue.
That gave food for discussion II
“Technically not demanding at all,” says Blick TV commentator Bruno Kernen about the route. This reflects the athletes’ driving style: there are hardly any passages or turns that force the drivers out of the crouching position.
Here’s how to proceed
At the end of the ski season, the men complete the Super-G on Thursday. It starts at 10 a.m., followed by the women’s race (from 12 p.m.).
