The foot hurts: Dominic Stricker has been battling an infection for weeks – also in Biel.

Dominic Stricker pulls the cord. The 20-year-old Berner has been struggling with foot problems since his victory at the tournament in Rovereto (It) at the end of February – now that is no longer possible. After the cancellation of the Challenger event in Lille (Fr), he will now also not participate in the planned tournaments in Barletta (It) and Split (Kro). The bitter result: the hunt for points by the current number 118 in the world immediately stopped and left the train for the main draw of the French Open.

To be allowed to start in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament in Paris for the first time in his career, he would have to reach the top 100 (and earn about 100 points) in mid-April. Now, at the end of May, he will once again take the route via qualification. Like recently at the Australian Open, where he failed in the third and final round.

Medicines hardly helped

The focus right now is on rehabilitation and a clean build up, says Stricker. The decision to call off the points chase was made due to the severe pain Stricker had been feeling for weeks. It is better to cure the inflammation than to take an unnecessary risk, says his father and manager Stephan Stricker. Especially since medication would not have helped enough.

When exactly the Roland Garros 2020 junior winner returns to the tour is open. A comeback would be possible in the last week of April.

There is also no clarity yet about the further cooperation with ex-Federer coach Peter Lundgren (58), who has been in an advisory role at Stricker in recent weeks. In Biel, the Swede recently announced that he was ‘ready’ for a workload of 12 to 14 weeks a year. Alongside Stricker’s new head coach, Dieter Kindlmann.

For now, however, Stricker’s focus is on rehabilitation anyway – rather than new playful input.
