Viktorija Golubic (WTA 116) finally got his first win of the year in a main draw at the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami.
The 30-year-old from Zurich defeated the American Hailey Baptiste (WTA 280) 7: 6 (7: 3), 6: 1. In the first set, the Swiss qualifier has to go into the tiebreak despite a 4-0 lead. In the second round, she gave up a break before conceding nine points to her opponent and scoring the first match point after 96 minutes.
Now the number 15 in the world awaits
It is the second victory for Golubic against 21-year-old Baptiste, who only found shelter in the main tournament thanks to a wild card. The two faced each other in qualifying at the US Open last August and Golubic also won.
The next opponent is the number 12 seed Ludmilla Samsonowa (WTA 15). Golubic decided the only game against the 24-year-old Russian in June 2019 in Nottingham on grass in three sets in her favor. (sda/bir)
