For our EM candidacy, the Credit Suisse hammer comes at a complicated time. In two weeks (April 4 in Nyon), the UEFA executive committee will decide whether Switzerland will host the 2025 European Women’s Championship. It would be the biggest football event here since Euro 2008 for men.
But now the Swiss candidacy is without its main partner. Last summer, CS announced its new commitment to EM 2025 at a press conference at its own Zurich office. Since then, CS funds have already flowed for the candidacy for the SFV.
But now the bank is going under shortly before the UEFA decision. Will the negative headlines affect the EM award? “Obviously it wasn’t the best message we could get across,” says Marion Daube.
The bank itself is not a major factor for EM
The SFV’s director of women’s football is also head of the EM candidacy and emphasizes to Blick that CS is primarily a partner for the candidacy phase and not for the EM tournament itself. “The EM is a UEFA tournament with UEFA partners.”
Financially, CS is not the most important partner in the euro dossier. Daube: «In a project like this, the financial support mainly comes from the parliaments of the cantons and cities. Their commitment is crucial.”
The policy of the eight locations Basel, Geneva, Bern, Zurich, St. Gallen, Lucerne, Thun and Sion makes some 50 million available in the event of a bid. The federal government also supports the EM.
Daube is more concerned with the overall situation than with the euro application, because the SFV and CS have been working together for 30 years. «I am very touched, because the cooperation has a family character. There are people behind it,” she says, “even if UBS takes over all the contracts, it remains to be seen how the partnership will continue in the future.”
