The role of former Federal Councilor Ueli Maurer in the CS debacle needs to be investigated.

The SVP targets the FDP. And the Finma meanwhile wallows. The fact that the SVP insults the FDP as a banking party says a lot about the Sünneli party, which until recently was responsible for the finance department as a federal council member. And the fact that the regulator on the financial markets is silent also speaks volumes. Bundesbern is looking for the perpetrators of the CS debacle. Two possible contributors react very differently: the first actor insults the liberals in order not to be pilloried. The second ducks.

The FDP financial politician Daniela Schneeberger (55) finds clear words: “Ueli Maurer has not reacted early.” That he told SRF at the end of the year that CS and UBS should simply be left alone for a year or two, “that was a blatant misconception,” according to the National Council.

“Close to the banks”

And the union federation’s chief economist, Daniel Lampart (55), doubled down in rare agreement with the liberals to the former SVP finance minister: “Ueli Maurer was very close to the banks.” He especially wanted to implement tax reduction programs ordered by them.

But what SP party leader Roger Nordmann (49) says now is rarely heard: “You have to be honest and agree with FDP chairman Thierry Burkart: today the SVP is the actual banking party. With its attack on the liberals, the SVP obviously wants to divert attention from the failure of its former finance minister. And cover up their pro-banking work in parliament.”

Toothless tiger

The SP demands clarity through a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (PUK) – on behalf of Maurer, but also for Finma. “It is clear that the oversight by Finma was insufficient – perhaps it failed. We therefore demand transparency about the gaps in the legislation. And whether and what omissions there were at Finma. You need a puk for that,’ says the National Council.

GLP boss Jürg Grossen (53) adds: “Finma and the National Bank have always assured us that they have everything under control. That has now turned out to be incorrect.” It is clear to the Green-Liberals that they must also be able to impose fines, “otherwise Finma will remain a toothless tiger”. But whether she should not have done so, she leaves open.

And center leader Philipp Matthias Bregy (44) is not closed to a PUK either. For him, however, the business audit committee should first consider the issue. If this doesn’t reveal anything, his group is open to a PUK. The rules for supervision and their implementation by Finma should also be examined.

Keller-Sutter wiped her mouth

Another top politician adds behind closed doors: The appearance of Finma president Marlene Amstad (55) at the press conference about the takeover of Credit Suisse by UBS speaks for itself. It goes without saying that Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (59) pulled a tongue over her mouth because Amstad spoke but said nothing about it. When she beats around how much interest the aid costs, it becomes clear: “Finma has fallen out of time.”

During the extraordinary session on CS, which will take place in about three weeks, Ueli Maurer and the toothless financial market regulator will be the subject. But the retired magistrate shouldn’t care if Parliament talks about him. And Finma, the epitome of what the SVP otherwise calls a darkroom, can go on and on as far as the lack of transparency is concerned.
