Journalist Alexandra Centeno’s book glorifies women who paved the way for equality in football
La Voz de Galicia journalist Alexandre Centeno presented ten thousand of Irene’s daughters yesterday. One hundred years of women’s football in Galicia (Libros Lar). With Riazor Stadium as the setting, the act became a demand for equality in sports. “As women we have to tear down the concrete roofs, more than the glass ones,” said the mayor of A Coruña, Inés Rey, who presided over the presentation. “This is a key research paper to understand what is happening,” said Xunta’s envoy to A Coruña, Gonzalo Trenor.
The first edition of the book, which went on sale on March 8, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, was printed in an initial edition of 4,500 copies. Centeno explained that, immersed in his doctoral work, he found an untapped field. “There was nothing documented about women’s football in Galicia,” said the author in an act attended by, among others, BNG spokesperson Ana Pontón, PP candidate for mayor of A Coruña, Miguel Lorenzo, former Deportivo presidents such as are Fernando Vidal and Paco Zas, several current club advisors, former players such as Fran and Manolete and coaches such as Rubén de la Barrera, Cristóbal Parralo and Manu Sánchez.
“This is a story of stories,” said Centeno about the different prisms from which Las ten thousand daughters of Irina approached, paying tribute to all those women who for a whole century allowed women’s football in Galicia not to die. Demand for equality around the ball and on the rectangle painted with lime.
Among his thanks, he highlighted the one addressed to the president of La Voz, Santiago Rey Fernández-Latorre, from whom, among other things, he learned “that just goals must be defended above all obstacles.” The text becomes a possible reference material, offering a faithful picture of the situation in Galician football in 2023. Each club with a women’s team has its own space, with information about its board, clothing, contacts, including health, workers, coaches…
